Registered Social Worker with SASW

  • What areas do you specialize in?

In my practice I work with adults, couples, and youth ages 16+. I have experience and specialized training in therapeutic interventions for individuals struggling with depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders as well as experience working therapeutically with individuals living with FASD, ADHD, and intellectual disabilities. I also have extensive experience working with individuals struggling with complex trauma, addictions, issues related to motherhood, and attachment disorders.

While in private practice I discovered a passion for working with couples and assisting them through times of healing and growth. I have specific training in Emotional Focused Couples Therapy and the Gottman Method (Level 2).

I am currently completing my Master of Social Work through the University of Regina. I am committed to lifelong learning and continued professional development.

  • What is your professional background?

I am a mental health professional with over 15 years of experience working with adults and adolescents in both community and government agencies. I received my Bachlor of Social Work (BSW) in 2012 from the University of Regina and since this time have spent my career in many roles; advocacy, counselling, leadership, mediation, program development and facilitation, with a focus on woman, youth and marginalized individuals affected by family violence, addictions, and a vast array of metal health issues, co- occurring disorders, and complex trauma. Regardless of the role, holding others’ stories has been at the heart of all of them.

My passion for working with women and marginalized individuals over the years has driven my desire to work in a solely therapeutic capacity where I can provide a safe and non-judgmental space where stories can be shared and honoured, and healing and growth can flourish.

  • What can I expect in a session with you?

As a trauma-informed practitioner, it is my goal for you to feel respected and safe in our sessions. You should feel that you are being allowed to slowly build a trusting therapeutic relationship and a sense of safety in our space before ever sharing deeper information with me. I approach practice with an authentic nature, meaning there will be laughter, tears, and honest conversations.

Our initial session will be different from future visits. We will focus on getting to know each other and you feeling comfortable in our space. We will talk about what brought you to our office and move at a pace you’re comfortable with, collaborating with you along the way, and work to keep you within your window of tolerance of emotions. If you are ready, we will devise an initial therapeutic plan that can be amended as we work towards your goals.

I believe people come to therapy with many skills, beliefs, and commitments they have cultivated throughout their lives that can help them reduce the influence of problems they are experiencing, even when things feel hopeless. It is my aim to explore with you the wisdom you already have and any ideas you might not yet have considered to work towards your goals. I will utilize aspects of Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness-Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Dr. Gabor Mate’s Compassionate Inquiry, and other modalities when tailoring interventions in the context of your history, triggers, and specific needs and goals.

  • What do you believe helps people to make changes or heal?

The stories we tell ourselves about who we are hold immense power. These stories can be painful, confusing, and complicated. I believe every person is inherently strong and deserving of understanding the power they hold within themselves. When someone is given the space to tell their story; to feel heard and validated, healing begins. Building trusting therapeutic relationships is at the core of my practice because I believe empathy and compassion are the key to unlocking these stories. It is when stories can be told, without the fear of blame or pathologizing, that allow us to re-define the painful experiences and rewrite our narrative in an empowering way. Without the feeling of connection and understanding there can be no safe place for growth.

  • What is a favourite quote related to counselling?

“The impulse to heal is real and powerful and lies within the client. Our job is to evoke that healing power, to meet its tests and needs and to support it in its expression and development. We are not the healers. We are the context in which healing is inspired.”
