Sarrah Ahmed (she/her)

Bachelor of Science (Psychology)
Practicum Student for M.A. in Counselling

  • What areas do you specialize in?

There are a number of counselling areas I wish to specialize in as I gain more experience in counselling. These areas include: anxiety, depression, eating disorders, trauma, domestic violence, interpersonal relationships, and neurodivergence. As I spent four years working with immigrants and refugees, I developed an understanding of the barriers and challenges they may face throughout their settlement journeys. I, therefore, also plan to specialize in immigrant and refugee mental health.

  • What is your professional background?

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in psychology from the University of Saskatchewan in June 2020. While attending university, I also volunteered at Peer Health on the University of Saskatchewan campus. My role primarily entailed providing mental health support to staff and students who needed it.

After graduating, I began working as a caseworker at a settlement agency where I assessed newcomers’ settlement needs in various areas, such as housing, education, employment, and mental and physical health. I am currently the team lead of the needs assessment and triage team. Throughout my four years of working at a settlement agency, I have developed experience in responding to mental health crises, domestic violence, child abuse, housing crises, and food insecurity in various newcomer populations.

While working at the settlement agency, I began the Master of Counselling program at Athabasca University. I am currently in the final year of the program and I am expecting to graduate in June 2025.

  • What can I expect in a session with you?

My approach to therapy is anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and feminist. It is also eclectic in nature. That is, I utilize various aspects of different forms of therapy, such as narrative therapy and strengths-based therapy, and cater them to your particular needs and situation. My main goal in therapy is to develop a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship with you and create a space where you feel supported, safe and comfortable with being open and vulnerable.

In our first session, we will get to know each other and talk a little bit about your presenting concerns. We may also develop a potential plan that we can follow in future therapy sessions. This plan can be altered as we progress through therapy. I strongly value open communication and feedback; I want to hear from you if anything needs to be changed or improved. You are the expert in your life and you know yourself best!

  • What do you believe helps people to make changes or heal?

I believe that when people are in an environment that makes them feel like they are accepted for who they are and safe enough to be vulnerable and open about their feelings, it can lead to change and healing. Being in such an environment would also help them recognize their own strength, resilience, and ability to grow, which would help give them the motivation to change and heal.

  • What is a favourite quote related to counselling?

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” - Carl Rogers
